[ male announcer ] being together is the best part of the holidays and cheerios is happy to be part of the family. you just ate dallas! >> jennifer: the now to my point, in june of 1944, around 150,000 brave men were asked to storm the beaches of normandy. at risk to themselves, they accepted the challenge on behalf of their nation and the world. they were heroes. they were leaders. imagine if we had leaders today with as much courage as each of those soldiers had in just one of their fingers. this gun debate and the fiscal cliff and frankly all important and difficult issues demand leaders who are willing to be personally uncomfortable. what are willing to lean into an oncoming storm rather than be blown along with it. the men at normandy risked their lives for what was right. our politicians could at least risk their campaign donations. it is easy to avoid tough decisions. it is easy to side step challenges to shirk your responsibilities.

senate. danielle inouye who represents hawaii in congress since becoming a state. he died yesterday. you might never know he was a true american hero. the 88-year-old was a medal of honor recipient who volunteered after pearl harbor even as his fellow japanese-americans were in internment camps. his unit most decorated in the war caught in a fire fight in italy and inouye shot in the stomach and wounded he continued to fight crawling up a hillside, grabbing a grenade of a wounded arm to kill the germans saving many lives. inouye lost that arm but while recovering from the wounds in the hospital he met two future senate greats. phillip hart and bob dole. they all ended up serving together. he became a key player in american political life for 50 years the vice president today swore in senator patrick leahy. third in line for the presidency. >> so help me god. >> congratulations. bittersweet moment. >> bittersweet indeed. he died with his wife and son at his side. his last word according to his office was, aloha. trusted everywhere. ♪ you make me happy [ female announcer ] choose the sam

to hawaii for the holidays. basically resetting the discussion for income rates at the threshold he originally wanted, $250,000 for couples. why that's important is because in previous conversations with speaker boehner, the president had moved off that number to something more friendly to the republican party, putting the number at about $400,000 and people thought that's where conversations would start today. democrats say, no, that's not the case because the speaker didn't have the membership vote on the $250,000 threshold. so this is about leverage, it's about negotiation. it's democrats going in to the meeting stronger they feel than what they perceive to be speaker boehner's position. republicans today talking about to me about various options they see and lots of conversations going on and certainly a spirit of willingness to get something done. can it get done? can it get done practically? those are the hard questions. >> yeah. after this 3:00 meeting, kelly o., will there be a document, a plan, a piece of legislation that will be carried from pennsylvania avenue to capitol
